Quick and easy homemade cheese steaks made on the Blackstone griddle with simple, store-bought pre shaved beef. This recipe is perfect for a family dinner or a fun backyard cookout. Here’s how to make it:

  • Veggies first, shaved beef last – Cook the peppers and onions first, then add the pre-shaved beef for perfect sear.
  • Salt at the end – Add salt at the end to avoid drawing out too much moisture from the beef.
  • Buns on top to help melt cheese and steam – Use buns to steam the cheese for a perfect melt while toasting them for added flavor.

Easy Cheese Steaks with Preshaved Beef

Quick and easy homemade cheese steaks made on the Blackstone griddle with simple, store-bought ingredients. This recipe is perfect for a family dinner or a fun backyard cookout. Here’s how to make it:
Prep Time5 minutes mins
Cook Time20 minutes mins
Total Time25 minutes mins
Course: lunch
Cuisine: American
Keyword: cheese steak
Servings: 4 people

Equipment

  • 2 Spatulas

Ingredients

  • 1 lb pre-shaved beef for cheese steaks
  • ½ onion diced
  • ½ red bell pepper sliced
  • ½ green bell pepper sliced
  • 4 sturdy bratwurst or sausage buns Aunt Millie's recommended
  • 8 slices provolone cheese or your preferred cheese
  • Salt to taste
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil for the griddle
  • Water for steaming
  • Jalapeños optional, for garnish
  • Salt and Vinegar chips for serving

Instructions

  • Preheat the Griddle: Set your Blackstone griddle to low heat with the two inside burners on and the outside burners off.
  • Cook the Veggies: Add the diced onion and sliced bell peppers to the griddle. Let them cook for about 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  • Toast the Buns: Once the veggies are softened, place the buns on the griddle to toast. You can toast yours to your preference, or you can steam them for a softer texture.
  • Cook the Beef: Add the pre-shaved beef to the griddle, spreading it out so it doesn't overlap. Let it cook for about 1 minute before dividing it into two piles. Add the cooked peppers and onions to the beef piles.
  • Season & Chop: Sprinkle the beef with salt to taste. Chop up the beef and veggies with two spatulas, mixing everything together.
  • Add Cheese: Create four even piles of the beef mixture (bun-length). Place 2 slices of provolone cheese on top of each pile. Tent the buns over the cheese to help it melt, adding a little water to help with the steaming process.
  • Finish & Serve: Once the cheese has melted, lift the buns off and check the cheese— it should be perfectly melted and bubbly. Carefully flip each pile with the spatula, forming your cheese steak sandwiches. For extra flavor, add sliced jalapeños on top.
  • Serve: Serve your cheese steaks with a side of Salt and Vinegar chips, and enjoy your backyard sandwich feast!

Hey, I'm Johnny!

My first job out of college was running a diner, where I learned how to cook on a griddle. When COVID hit, I bought a griddle for myself and started making YouTube videos. Five years and 18 million views later, I now teach griddling full time. I help everyday folks get the most out of their Blackstone by keeping it simple, beginner-friendly, and real. These aren’t viral recipes—just the kind of food you'd actually make for your family.
